California, Arizona, Texas, Georgia and Indiana are the leading U.S. producers of cantaloupes (muskmelons). In Indiana, muskmelons are grown largely in the southern part of the state. The total U.S. cantaloupe crop was harvested from 113,770 acres in 1997 with a total yield of 2356,000 cwt (average yield = 207 cwt/acre), and a total value of $417,859,000. In 1997, production of cantaloupes was up about 6.5% from 1996.

Leading producers of fresh market honeydew melons in the U.S. are California (23,200 acres harvested; 4,640,000 cwt; 200 cwt/acre; $86,304,000), Arizona (4,200 acres harvested; 735,000 cwt; 175 cwt/acre; $13,598,000) and Texas (2,000 acres harvested; 420,000 cwt; 210 cwt/acre; $9,492,000) (1997 figures). The total U.S. crop of honeydew melons was produced on 29,400 acres, with a total yield of 5,795,000 cwt (average yield = 197 cwt/acre), and a total value of $109,394,000 in 1997. In 1997, production of honeydew melons was up about 22% from 1996.
