HIPPOCASTANACEAE

Aesculus indica, Coleb. ex Wall. India (area unspecified): nuts [sic] eaten; (Garhwal Himalayas): seed embryo ground and mixed with sugar. Ref. GUPTA, WATT.

Aesculus turbinata, Blume. Japan: processed into flour during the period of scarcity immediately following World War II. Vernacular names: Japanese Horse Chestnut,Tochi -no -ki. Ref. S.C.A.P.

Hippocastanum vulgare, Gaertn. France: starch of seed recommended as famine food for extending bread flour, after removal of bitter element. Ref. PARMENTIER.

Hippocratea africana (Willd.) Loes. Nigeria (Kano State, northern): leaves (?) eaten. Vernacular name - Hausa: Gwa'dayi. Ref. MORTIMORE.

Koelreuteria paniculata, Laxm. China: leafy shoots eaten. Vernacular name: China Tree. Ref. READ.
