SCROPHULARIACEAE

Melampyrum purpurescens, Gilib. France: seeds recommended as famine food. They can be mixed with wheat flour, however, the resulting bread will be black in color. Ref. PARMENTIER.

Rehmannia glutinosa, Lib.; Stend. China: roots and leaves eaten. The leaves are either boiled or they may be powdered and mixed with juice from the root and cooked. The root is steamed and sun-dried nine times. Vernacular name: Rehmannia. Ref. READ.

Rehmannia lutea, Maxim. China: as for Rehmannia glutinosa (q.v.) Ref. READ.

Scrophularia nodosa, L. France: starch of root recommended as famine food for extending bread flour, after removal of bitter element. Ref. PARMENTIER.

Veronica agrestis, L. China: shoots and leaves eaten. Vernacular name: Field Speedwell. Ref. READ.

Veronica Anagallia, L. China: shoots and leaves eaten. Vernacular name: Water Speedwell. Ref. READ.

Veronica longifolia, L. China: shoots and leaves eaten. Vernacular name: Long Speedwell. Ref. READ.
