Reed canarygrass, Annual canarygrass

Reed canarygrass is native in North America, Europe and Asia. Its seed has long been used as canary bird feed, hence the name. It grows in broad clumps that may be 3 feet across. it is one of the best grasses for wet soils, but also is adapted to uplands. It is hardy and grows rapidly during spring and early summer, persists well, and has a long grazing season. It produces heavy yields of nutritious, palatable forage, silage or hay. It is important in the North Central States and in the Pacific States from northern California northward. Propagation is by seed. Improved varieties are available.
