The durian is a fruit native to Southeast Asia, where it is important in native
diets, but has been little planted in other tropical areas. The tree is large
and strictly tropical, with leathery leaves 6 to 7 inches long. Fruits are
large, up to 5 pounds or more, with a hard rind covered with woody
protuberances. The edible pulp has a strong reeking odor, but a rich, bland
taste, much esteemed where the tree is native. Individual trees may have been
planted in Hawaii and Puerto Rico, but are not known in continental United
States.
